Global Food Crisis Looming On Horizon

Global food shortages are just around the corner if something doesn’t change soon. Some people suggest we’re already in the midst of just such a crisis, while others are optimistic that any such crisis can be averted.

One thing is sure: whether global warming is naturally occurring, the result of human activity, or a combination of both—it is going to exacerbate the situation as weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable.

An additional consideration is that increasing deforestation and widespread adoption of industrial scale agriculture will lead to more desertification and loss of valuable micro-habitat that certain species need to survive. Here in America, species that thrive in edge-growth, such as quail for example, are finding their habitat shrinking. Similar things are happening on a global scale. These things, coupled with the water shortage that the world is predicted to face beginning at the middle of the century bodes ill for everyone.

However, steps are being taken to address these issues. In many developing nations, there are efforts underway to educate and train farmers in improved agriculture methods. Reducing and eventually eliminating slash and burn agriculture will help in some respects, yet much more needs to be done. In some nations, staple foods are undergoing substitution as food costs, population growth and exports outstrip the capacity for production.

The UN recently set up a food crisis task force to address the needs of the world’s starving at the direction of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. An estimated 100 million are going without food right now and as the global population jumps from around 6.5 billion to an estimated 9 billion before the end of the century, a dire situation faces the world’s population if aggressive measures aren’t taken.

Wheat and rice prices are soaring. The price of rice in some places has doubled in the last six months. Wheat has risen by as much as 130%. Around the globe, labor unions and workers are protesting current global economic situations and the rising price of food.

Even here in America, land of plenty and amber waves of grain, there are concerns as people in the northeast part of the country have begun hoarding staples and other foods. Cooking oil, flour, rice and even grain stocks are being horded across the country. Rising gasoline prices aren’t helping things either.

In The Space Of A Heartbeat, In The Span Of One Breath

I’m not sure what to think of this story, except that is sad in so many ways.

The CEO of a Chinese toy manufacturer committed suicide when the company’s products were recalled due to use of lead-based paint. It is apparently common in China for disgraced officials to commit suicide, but what makes this case sad is that it is not clear that this fellow was allowing this to happen intentionally.

It seems that his best friend sold him the paint, which had too much lead in it. It is easy to see how in China, with the newness of modern capitalism and the size of the population and the employment/working conditions that any manufacturer would feel a lot of pressure to succeed. Yet, the constant drive to maximize profit and feed the monster of the bottom line is a rotting disease in the minds of modern humankind.

Sometimes, you simply need what will work, and what will get you by…and not the best or the most. Quite often, the path to the most is the worst way to travel.

As I have said before, I truly believe those companies and individuals who cannot or will not embrace the principles of living economies—and the notion that an acceptable return (as opposed to a maximum return) is inherently better not just for business, but for life—will find themselves struggling in the business world of the future…

Update On Air Powered Cars

A while back I mentioned a unique car that had been designed and built in India, that runs on air power. It appears now the car is going into production, and is slated to make appearances in at least 12 different countries.

The bad news is that it will not be making an appearance in America. The construction of the vehicle and its performance in crash tests are likely to keep it out of the American market.

That’s a shame, because this is an idea whose time has come…

No Global Warming: The Other Side Of The Story

Someone submitted a link in a comment anonymously, and while I will not generally approve such comments, I did want to post a link that was included. It is for a video that suggests there is no global warming, and that it is merely politically motivated and the product of ‘censorship and intimidation’ by environmentalists.

I am open-minded enough to entertain opposing viewpoints, especially in the name of journalistic fairness. There are some things, though, I would like to point out—in the form of questions to those who say there is no global warming.

Dell Finally Getting The Linux Message

It has taken long enough, but PC maker Dell is coming around. They received more than 100,000 requests for Linux on their PCs in the past three weeks. Maybe they should have put a ’suggestion box’ on their website sooner?

An Inconvenient Al: Gore Thinks Like Hezbollah And Hamas

Al Gore says he leads a carbon-neutral lifestyle and that his outrageous electric bill is OK. The former Vice President, fresh off an academy award win with his documentary, is trying his hand again at the moral equivalency argument made popular by his former boss, Bill Clinton.

It seems Al Gore’s home uses more than ten times the amount of electricity an average Nashville home uses.

Gore believes this is OK because he invests in green energy. His ‘carbon-neutral’ lifestyle means that as long as you are rich enough to invest large enough amounts in renewable energies, you can feel guilt-free about lighting an oil well on fire like Saddam did back in the Gulf War…

Solar Power On My Mind

A company named Citizenrē is offering free solar systems for homeowners. They will install it, and all you have to do is agree to buy your electric from them at prices under your current utility company charges.

You will get the chance to buy the equipment from the company and most importantly, you will help save the environment. Sounds fantastic. However, the company is drawing fire. See why over on Wired.com and then check out the company for yourself.

Also, check out web hosting company Affordable Internet Services Online, Inc.—a solar powered hosting company.

A Car That Runs On Air

I came across the most incredible thing I have seen yet for ‘green’ transportation. Sure, electric cars are great, but here’s one that runs on air!

You have to see photos of this amazing car and read about it. This is big, folks. There are still some issues to be cleared up with patents and investing it seems, but this holds enough promise to knock air pollution on its proverbial butt.

300 kilometer range on a single charge. No smoke and pollution. Runs on air…I still have a hard time believing it!

Electric Dragster Stuns Writer Four Years Later (Stirling Engines And Fresnel Lenses, Too)

I don’t understand why people are so eager to discard one method or energy source when it won’t work as a stand-alone system. Seems to me that integrating multiple energy sources is the way to go. Opportunity Resource Systems, or some such thing (there, I’ve contributed a theory to science, or at least the skeleton of one, and haven’t even had my coffee yet), ought to be a direction we look in for a solution to our needs.

If you’re like me and haven’t been aware of the progress in electric cars, here’s an eye opener: a dragster aptly named Bad Amplitude and created by the Net Gains Technologies consulting firm managed to turn out a sizzling 127 mph 1/4 mile run that put the driver through an amazing 3.5 g’s.

Global Warming Hits Backyard

Recently, the Ayles ice shelf near Ellesmere Island in Canada broke away in what has been called the largest event of its kind in the past three decades. One of six remaining ice shelves in Canada, the event was of such epic proportions that it apparently registered on earthquake detection equipment more than 150 miles away.

That’s pretty alarming. What’s more, you don’t really need to look to the far, not-so-frozen-anymore north to see that global warming is a reality. Those of us who haven’t had our heads in the sand (or, up our butts like most self-serving politicians and greedy corporations) have been aware of what’s been going on for some time.
