Not surprising really. The GOC (Government of Columbia) used the International Red Cross logo in violation of the Geneva Convention during its recent hostage rescue. Pretty much the same thing terrorists do, isn’t it…hiding in mosques and such?
There isn’t much difference between Columbia’s government and the FARC. Columbia has had a corrupt government for many years, and certainly engages in less than legal and ethical activities. It even supports some narco-trafficking paramilitaries. But the GOC is on good terms with our own Federal government, and signing deals with Panama and the Port of New Orleans and the American Congress just as fast as it can.
America has neglected Latin America for far too long, and now China and even Hezbollah are rampant throughout South America. The governments we’re on good terms with aren’t exactly progressive nor without their share of oppression and human rights abuses—not to mention they contribute to the global narcotics market in no small measure. Which even Afghanistan does. Funny how we support so many nations producing so much of the drugs on the world market, isn’t it? Even funnier that our own military and law enforcement agencies even aid and abet narco-trafficking and human rights abuses (such as against the Mapuche and other citizens in Chile).
I’m sure there’s a good reason for it though, right?
Anyone out there actually think anything will happen to Columbia for its war crimes? That’s what using the Red Cross logo in a military operation constitutes after all. Nothing will happen to Columbia’s government, no one will stand trial, and no one will go to prison or be executed or removed from power. It is perfectly fine to violate the law when those carrying the biggest sticks (and waterboarding like it’s a sport) are your patrons after all.

A newspaper in Mexico’s northwestern state of Sonora had to shut down because of threats from criminals (drug dealers) after someone tossed a grenade through its office windows. Threats against employees continued, and they were left with no choice, as the Mexican government has been unable to curb violence in Sonora.
Various news media groups are saying that only Iraq is more dangerous to journalists.
What is surprising about that? Not a lot. But consider other factors, and what you get is a picture of Mexico as the staging ground for concerted attacks on American sovereignty, our economy, and our way of life.

I found an article about the efforts of the cocoa eradication and the war on drugs by the US government in Columbia. Nothing surprising really, but it was interesting in one of the conclusions reached.
It seems eradication efforts are up, but so is cocoa production in other South American nations and general cocaine availability. This had some officials puzzled. The suggested answer is that cartels are hoarding cocaine and releasing small amounts of it–which means someone has one hell of a stash…

This may surprise many of my regular readers. Or not. Today, a post of conscience on an issue that the majority of my regular readers know is a hot-button topic for me—illegal immigration.
I had recently signed up for the Blogs For Borders project and yesterday was to be the second week to post the weekly blog burst here. However, I took issue with it. I am staunchly for immigration control and securing our borders. There are many things, though, that I do not stand for, nor advocate.
I took issue with this week’s blog burst. I wrote an open letter to the makers of it, and post it here for your perusal. I had originally intended not to include the blog burst, but chose to do so, so you could see for yourselves why I took issue with it.
To those who think I only see one side of an issue, this should prove a real eye-opener…

You know, I cut Canadians a lot of slack and for a lot of reasons. Their country is beautiful, they make some good beer, their women are cute and sexy (heck, some are hot), and I trained with some great guys in Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry once. They try hard to appear as a happy, friendly people who are enlightened and love everyone (kind of like the French), and they have fostered a reputation for being an all-around swell bunch of people.
Unfortunately, they have problems pulling it off when there are such major and glaringly obvious examples that go to show there is a darker, more sinister side to our northern neighbor.
