Jet JJ-6CS 6″ Jointer, $449 with free freight at Rockler! Ends at midnight…

For all you woodworkers out there, Rockler has a free freight offer on some power tools, including the Jet JJ-6CS 6″ jointer. That on top of the great price of $449.

They were running the special earlier in the month and it was due to end over a week ago, but they extended it. I think perhaps they are trying to clear them out. If you are shopping for a new 6″ jointer, this is a steal on this model. Typically, most etailers are selling it for $550-650…and you still have to pay shipping and freight.

Some places will charge you $75-125 for residential delivery. On top of that, they tack on another $35-100 for a lift gate fee if you don’t have a standard delivery ramp…and come on, how many of us have one of those at home? Added up, you would normally be shelling out well over $700 for this jointer unless you happen to have a freight center nearby (and a good friend or two to help you load and unload this thing when you get home).

When I first came across the sale/free freight offer online, I called Rockler to confirm it, and it is just as it says: you pay a $13.75 handling fee, but residential delivery and lift gate charges are free!

Ends at midnight tonight…and I wouldn’t trust that they will extend the offer into the new year. If they do extend it another week or two, I may order one myself. I have been looking at the JJ-6CS and a couple of Grizzly models for the past month. I know, I ought to go for the Powermatic 54A…and the thought is still on my mind.

Anyway, hurry! The Rockler sale ends at midnight tonight. What better way to start the new year off than a brand new Jet 6″ jointer delivered right to your door for under $465?

I just saw today that the sale was still on or I would have posted about this when I discovered it on the 21st when the sale was slated to end the first time around.

As a side note: they are selling brand new Porter-Cable 690LR routers (1 3/4 hp with 1/4″ collet) for $99. Regularly, $149. If you’re a hobbyist or need a reliable router for lightweight or non-production work, that is about as good a deal as you can find. With all the router accessories and guide bushings out there that work with the Porter-Cable routers, you can’t go wrong with that.

Happy New Year’s to all!

I Almost Joined Facebook, But Don’t Work For Free

I had been mulling over joining the community at Facebook for most of the past year, however, their recent unveiling of new marketing methodology/technology (Beacon) saved me the bother.

I don’t work for free, so I do not feel much like playing to role of marketing intern (you know, standing on the side of the street in a chicken suit with a large sign) for Facebook’s 23 year old helmsman. Facebook is embracing one of the most intrusive marketing methods the Net has seen so far. Now, every member will act like an advertising billboard! Whoo-hoo!

I want even more cookies and monitoring of my personal online habits! I want advertisers to fool people I know into thinking I actually use crappy products and shop at unsecured websites and buy things from companies who think customer service means doing you the favor of letting you buy their stuff!

OK, now back to reality. I do NOT want all of those things. And I have no intention of encouraging friends to deal with such things either…

Video: Richard Hart - Laying Low (live)

OK, so this is the first time I’ve done the whole embedding a video in a blog post thing. Actually this is the first time I have been inspired to do so.

This performance by Richard Hart at Inside The Bungalow in Mesa, Arizona was just really moving for so many reasons. I like his guitar tone, his voice reminds me of Bob Dylan—only clearer and more pleasant to listen to—and his tasty slide work adds such a distinctive vibe to the song. Just check it out for yourself and see what you think.

There are other reasons I like the song. I find empathy easy enough with this one…

Who Do We Want In The White House Next? Picture This…

Who do we want to see in the White House after ‘W’ and Laura vacate the premises and head back to Crawford, Texas?

Personally, I think almost all of the candidates suck. Tom Tancredo and Ron Paul would be a welcome change just to shake things up. While I think he’s weak on some issues, Fred Thompson would be alright. He might even get rid of the IRS and let Americans keep their guns. Besides, I can think of worse things than having the hottest First Lady around.

Fred or bust…

Obama? He would shake things up, but his experience is really lacking and since he’s let Oprah throw the race card into his candidacy, he’s probably already lost. Hillary? Hell no. I wouldn’t vote for her if she were the only candidate or even the last person on Earth.

Besides, who would you rather see at the White House? Let’s recap…

Who do you want in the White House?

Why The Benazir Bhutto Assassination?

Just when things had looked to be taking a turn for the better throughout the entire Middle East and region of the Indian sub-continent, something had to happen to ruin it all. That is, of course, precisely why it happened.

It was sad news this morning to hear of the assassination of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister. She stood a good chance of taking Musharraf’s place. At the absolute worst, some sort of power-sharing co-governance between the two as Prime Minister and President seemed likely. This changes everything—which it was meant to do.

She knew of the risks, and bravely did what she felt was her duty. The big question is out there, hanging…waiting for an answer: to whom do we credit this assassination?

Why The BCS Still Sucks: It Has Never Worked

OK, the BCS “computers” still have Missouri ranked ahead of OU (.850 Mizzou, .800 OU)…the team that handed them both of the losses on their record.

Someone explain to me how on Earth that is possible?

Even Kansas had an .810% showing by these computers (which must be infected with viruses or something)…when they didn’t win their division, nor the conference.

Next, explain how Missouri did not even get into a BCS bowl game—because that does not make any sense, either.

Then, explain how Hawaii—who has played a tougher schedule than Ohio State and is undefeated is not in the BCS title game?

Next, explain to me why the #4 rated team in the BCS (Oklahoma) is playing the #9 rated team instead of a tougher opponent when they just kicked Missouri’s ass (they didn’t just beat them, they whipped them hard)…who was the #1 team and still—according to the all-knowing BCS computers is supposed to be better than OU?

BCS Broken? My friends, it hasn’t ever worked…

Anybody But Ohio State, Please!

OU defeated #1 ranked Missouri (the second time this year they have beaten the Tigers) soundly, 38-17. West Virginia fell victim to the season’s #2 curse, losing to Pittsburgh. Now it is time to decide who goes to the BCS title game.

Please, please, please…don’t let it be Ohio State. They are 10-1, have not beaten a single team in the top 20 all season and their conference doesn’t have a title game to make them earn the top spot in their division through head-to-head competition as in other divisions.

They will only make the title game suck. We fans deserve better than that…

At Least The Beer Bandit Has Good Taste

The Guinness brewery suffered a hijacking. 180 kegs of Guinness stout, 180 kegs of Budweiser and 90 kegs of Carlsberg (it brews the latter two under license for distribution in the UK) were stolen.

39,600 pints worth. That’s a lot of brew to steal.

I hope they catch the bandit and punish him or her severely. Then again, it’s hard to hold a grudge against a bandit with such good taste. Speaking of Guinness, I need to pick some up soon…
