Roz Savage Starts Solo Row Across Pacific
August 12, 2007
Already the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Roz Savage is aiming to be the first woman to row solo across the Pacific. Less than 24 hours ago, she finally caught a break in the weather and set out.
I have no doubt she’s going to pull this one off. After reading about her, there’s nothing to say but that she’s an amazing woman. And, amazing people can do amazing things.
I am particularly interested in following her efforts because my curiosity demands it. It’s the sort of thing I would love to do first of all, and secondly, I am curious about the blogging and Internet connectivity issues that she faces on her trip. You see, she’s going to be blogging through the trip, and her posts will be remotely posted.
Apparently, her blog is powered by SailBlogs.com, which is tailored for intrepid adventurers of the sailing variety. They offer different plans to suit different needs. I have heard of a few different setups people have used to update others on their ocean voyages, ranging from text messaging to shortwave relay to satellite relay. I like the fact that blogging at sea is a reality, as it is simple and personal—but, also because it appeals to my techy side.
I discovered Roz’s planned trip on National Geographic’s Adventure website (which is great), and had to take a peak at her website. The more I read, the more I want to head out on my own ocean adventure. The wheels are turning, plans are being made.
Soon…

Well, thanks; I haven’t visited that site yet, but, as mentioned, that answers my question… =)
Did you enjoy ‘Sailing Alone around the World’ by Joshua Slocum?
By the way, just a crazy idea from a crazy Canuck -and this is more in the vein of good fun and encouragement and comradery for those of us (regular and occasional readers of your blog) with a sense of adventure who cannot join you on your trip rather than, say, the idea of the guy with the red paperclip- but would you consider, if you have not already, the idea of other bloggers (who read and enjoy your blog), such as myself, sending you some cash (to help, even in a small way, to finance your trip (even $1, $2, $5, $10 $25 here and there to some online account (paypal? or other account) might actually add up quickly) for just, say, to buy one particular piece of equipment that you might need on your boat,……IN RETURN for having our name or a sentence of no more than, say, 5 or 10 words of a certain size written in black waterproof marker on one of your sails or even on deck somewhere, so that we may join in on your fun - and participate- in a small way?
(Hold on a sec…ok, here:…If you have ever heard of the TransCanada trail, it is in this vein that I am making the suggestion, http://www.tctrail.ca/thetrail.php plus, hey, we get to have our names to sail along to exotic places (with you) and that is an intriguing thought in and of itself… I think I’d feel equally happy about having my name visit wherever it is that you want to go, so that I am there in spirit if not person.. I have only ever visited various places in the United States and Canada and in Europe so revisiting those or anywhere else new, even in spirit, is a bonus )…
And, in that way, if you decide to continue to blog while at sea, we can all join in with a vested interest, yes?
=)
Again, please excuse my English in this explanation…
Take care,
Stephanie
