Why American Democracy Is Failing

June 28, 2007

American style democracy is showing many flaws and weaknesses—something that it began doing quite some time ago. However, since the start of the 21st century, hairline fractures have turned into major cracks in the foundation. And they continue to grow.

Our government is failing in all the fundamental requirements and responsibilities of a government: national defense, secure borders, opportunities, looking out for the interests of those who consent to be governed, and providing for future generations into posterity.

The Obvious Problems With Democracy?

It is a tyranny of the masses. The only thing that is right is what the majority wants, and the minority is simply ignored until they cease to exist. And the majority retains fewer values and ethics with each generation as a result of the republic’s modus operandi.

One example that democracy and an “enlightened” society have given us? Parents cannot discipline children. You’re considered abusive and mean if you take away their cellphone and Xbox privileges these days. In fact, if you move more than once in a year, in pursuit of better jobs and opportunities and a better life for your kids, Department of Human Services and the court systems can actually order you to remain in one place and accuse you of being a bad parent!

And because capitalists out to make a quick dollar in Hollywood made “cutting” popular, now it is the standard cry for attention by American teenagers. Parents who attempt to gain control of their kids either end up in jail or the teenagers just get emancipated.

Then everyone complains when those who never learned limits commit heinous crimes. Was it really surprising?

Stop feigning surprise already.

The other extreme, of course, is that the government invades family life and does such monstrous things as forcing drugs on kids, which in cases leads to death.

The fact that we live in a democratic republic has created institutions that fail and an out-of-control bureaucracy that is a self-sustaining entity. The military-industrial complex is likewise out of control and our government cannot even secure our borders. We have destroyed family values, and wouldn’t Lenin be proud?

While capitalism is not in and of itself a bad tool (being merely an economic principle), the pursuit of it to the exclusion of all other concerns—or basing the assessment of a society’s needs off of capitalism and economics exclusively—is a recipe for failure. The disappearance of ethics in American business and government could be argued as both a disturbing trend and as a myth, suggesting that there were never such things ever in existence to begin with.

Certainly, a nation who fostered genocide by handing out smallpox infested blankets to an indigenous population as official military strategy has a shaky leg to stand on at best. A nation whose leaders refuse to secure its borders against an invasion by foreigners—an alarming number of which are criminals of various sorts—is doomed to failure. At least the Romans had the courage to fight the barbarians hordes that invaded. To do nothing is beyond pathetic.

Why Has America Become So Pathetic?

Well, I point to the absurdity of the fact that the government is fighting a legal battle over whether or not a convicted murderer on death row should be given a sex change operation at taxpayer expense. It is bad enough that the proposed operation would be at taxpayer expense, but the entire legal battle is at taxpayer expense as well! There is no argument anyone can make that justifies even the consideration of such a ludicrous suggestion.

If he/she/it cannot or does not want to continue living as a man or in a man’s body or whatever hell else you like to call it, and that person decides to commit suicide, why should I or anyone else care? I’m a compassionate person, now, but no one has an obligation to waste taxpayer money so a murderer can have operations which are unnatural—just so they can enjoy a better state of mind.

Why no one in government will simply say “no” and be done with it is beyond comprehension. Why a judge would not simply say “no” and quickly pass it up to another Court of Appeals whose judge should be intelligent enough to say “no” and keep passing it on up until it reaches the Supreme Court which should say “no” and be done with it, is beyond the realm of any stretch of common sense. Why waste the money of the taxpayers even with that?

What if someone were imprisoned on death row but felt they couldn’t live life as a human, and that in their mind they were meant to be a cyborg? Should we give them bionic legs and arms—perhaps with an integral rocket launcher in their femur, so they could lift their knee, aim at the prison wall and blast it apart to escape? No, really. If you’re going to give one person a sex change, why shouldn’t you give someone a cybernetic conversion if it’s necessary to their state of mental well-being?

Idiocy like this is why America is failing. People in America live in poverty, are homeless, and we waste money on convicted murderers arguing whether they deserve a tax-payer funded sex change? Who says America is not like ancient Rome in its waning days?

Democracy Is Its Own Worst Enemy

As illegal aliens invade by the millions and they refuse to assimilate and embrace being American, their children get to become citizens who have no appreciation of what it means to be American. Their only loyalties are to their family, their neighborhood and the Mexico of their heritage. Witness all the Mexican flag waving that goes on at pro-illegal alien rallies.

Eventually, as the number of both legal and illegal immigrants grows faster than the rate at which they embrace American values and culture and the English language, a democracy weakens itself. With Hispanic and Muslim populations growing far faster than other demographics, what happens when it is in America’s national interests to engage in some policy that might upset Muslim nations or Hispanics (such as having to wage a war in a Hispanic nation in Latin America)?

National Interests Will Be Subjugated By Familial, Ethnic, Religious Ties

Obviously, such policies cannot be implemented simply because sheer numbers will dictate that policies which are perceived as being unfavorable towards Hispanic or Muslim nations will draw unfavorable response from the population. Politicians and special interest groups will ensure that such policies cannot be pursued.

What will happen when the political divisions in this country are no longer drawn along party lines, but along religious and ethnic lines?

What happens when 20 states are mostly Hispanic, and another 20 are mostly Muslim? Will democracy then dictate that Spanish become the official language, and will the majority dictate that women cannot walk the streets without a male escort and have to suffer arranged marriages?

Official Language Spanish, Illegal Alien Safe Haven

Look at El Cenizo, Texas. This community on the border has made Spanish the official language and declared itself a “safe haven” for illegal immigrants. They passed an ordinance that forbids any city staff to help law enforcement or government agencies turn in illegal aliens!!!

This is the future of America, right?

Immigration reform is needed, but even more drastic than what has been suggested. It is time we stop the destruction of American values and culture simply because we feel we need to keep the population growing to compete with China and other nations economically. That’s a path straight to oblivion. It is no competent strategy for the preservation of a state to open your borders and invite anyone and everyone in just to have lots of cheap labor and customers for a throw-away economy that embraces crappy products—simply to stimulate an economy to compete with other nations rather than to ensure the government meets the needs of those it governs.

America has stopped focusing on the needs of its citizens. Instead, it is focusing on the needs of economic competition on a global scale. But what is the primary function and reason for the existence of government? It is to protect, secure, and assure the existence of a people of some common origin, cause, or belief.

American federal government has lost sight of those reasons, and has thrown away its claim to legitimacy. The reason for government now is simply the creation of wealth for those who already have it and for the military-industrial complex. America’s government is little more than a bureaucratic machine in the form of a large corporation seeking to do business globally. It will allow anyone and anything, so long as it creates wealth.

New Management Of Immigration Is Needed

We need to control immigration. Literally turn it on and off like a valve.

The solution is simple. We need to allow immigration for brief periods, and then turn it off for several years at a time. Or better, do it in round-robin fashion. One year, immigrants from 10 nations are allowed. Next year, immigrants from a different 10. And so on, so that over the course of 10-15 years, you only get a limited number of immigrants from any particular nation. This gives the immigrants time to assimilate and adopt/adapt to American culture, learn the language, and embrace American values.

While I am all for cultural diversity, diversity is one thing and cultural destruction or suicide is quite another. That should be avoided. Further, we should in any case be allowing less immigration. All it does is drive up the price of land in America where more than 35 million are already living below the poverty line. Why wouldn’t a government not instead focus on its existing citizens first?

Why are we not fixing the problems we have already within our existing population and instead simply growing it without any good excuse other than because we think the economy needs to compete with other nations? The truth is that in the grand scheme of international economics, a nation needs to provide for its people’s well-being, but that there is no reason one nation must be wealthier or more populous than another—except to prevent a hostile takeover by an enemy state.

That is a very real concern.

Who Are We Competing Against? Who Are Our Rivals?

However, the American government refuses to acknowledge that have enemies outside of terrorists for fear of damaging “relations” with other nations. We only have two nations bordering our lands—Canada and Mexico. If they are not the enemies we must dominate economically and militarily, then who is? Russia and China? We are separated by vast oceans and we have an extensive nuclear capability. There is no reason we need or should try to outstrip either economically to be honest.

Russia is in economic shambles. China is starting to show growing pains and cracks in communism as its rapidly growing population sees hints of freedoms and liberties. What we should be doing is improving the lives of those already within our nation’s borders and creating an even higher standard of living, and retooling our society for the time when oil runs out, creating a more sustainable and environmentally sound civilization—not a larger one that consumes more crap and generates more garbage and pollution and has no cultural commonality or shared ideals.

Otherwise, we’ll end up like Africa. A land full of shanty-towns, poverty and famine and a population that strains the ability of the land to support it.

For some reason, people seem to think that everyone in the world has a right to citizenship in America. What the hell ever happened to bringing democracy to other nations? What the hell ever happened to the idea of people building up their own countries and changing them for the better?

Why are we letting America suffer, its citizens forced to bear the burden of supporting people fleeing nations who have not put out the same effort and made the same sacrifices that Americans have for generations? Just because America was founded by immigrants does not mean we are still today a nation of immigrants: we are a nation founded by immigrants who are now Americans and have been for more than two centuries. When do we finally say enough is enough?

Is Stricter Immigration Control Un-American?

I often hear the argument that wanting greater controls on immigration is somehow hypocritical and “un-American,” of all things—because immigration built this nation. What rubbish. As I mentioned, we used to give out diseased blankets as a matter of government policy. Should we continue doing that too? Perhaps we should do as one person suggested and start handing out prayer rugs that are radioactive?

Wake up people. Simply doing something because everyone else is doing it or because that’s the way it was done hundreds of years ago is a weak argument. If you cannot justify immigration against the needs of a nation to preserve what makes it a nation, you shouldn’t be doing it. That’s sort of like smoking. Everyone knows its bad for you, but they do it just because everyone else does, or out of boredom, or because a mental crutch is needed to calm the nerves.

Immigration as it currently applies to America is pretty much the same thing.

Do we simply turn into another Africa or India with an exploding population, no land available, the existing land deforested, agriculture in jeopardy? Do we turn into a nation dependent on the production of a tiny fraction of the population, with no common values and a military that is sent to the far corners of the world constantly—like ancient Rome?

What is wrong with controlled immigration? What is wrong with expecting immigrants to learn English, our history, our values and become Americans rather than Germans, Indians, Irish, or Hispanics or Muslims who happen to live in America? The whole proclivity towards being a “hyphenated-American” is the death knell of our nation.

I’m all for immigration. I’m all for people bringing a bit of their culture and sharing it with the rest of us. But I am not for replacing our culture with theirs. If you want to live like you did in the hinterlands of some other country and by those laws and values…well, stay there. If you want to be an American, then welcome.

Someone tell me why we shouldn’t limit the number of immigrants from nations, and disallow it from a nation for periods of years at a time to allow assimilation? There is no reason that can be put forth that isn’t some form of, “How dare you! Everyone is ENTITLED to be American no matter what!”

If that’s the case, why not just ask other nations if they would like to be admitted to the union as the next state, implement democracy and save everyone the cost of relocating their families? Oh wait, I remember, there’s some government somewhere that wants to preserve what it has and not give it up to America. Why is it that American politicians seem to think we ought to give away everything we have, everything that made us great, and all the money American taxpayers generate…to the point where we give away the very nation we live in?

The great fear by those who either want to destroy us for political or religious reasons and those who want a one-world government is that people will become so Americanized they won’t pursue the agendas of radicals and religious zealots in the nations the immigrants left behind. That’s no joke.

A democracy without guiding principles and a common vision tying people’s interests together quickly leads to a nation steered by passing fancy and fads. Continuing to pursue the policies our government has chosen to do so will soon make America just like all the nations that immigrants left behind, so perhaps the problem will solve itself—when America is a rotting corpse, fading into history…

I would like to make the point that labor is the only thing that generates wealth. Illegal/legal alien labor is a way for the business owner to generate and HOLD said wealth in their hands. This allows for the empowerment of the elites by expunging the middle class and enlargement of the peon masses. Also, the alien presence allows for the increase of any politician’s power; who is more than willing to prostitute their nation for personal gain.
What makes a nation poor when they have the resources and labor to use it? Corruption, usury, irresponsible taxation, exchanging freedom for security, and the loss of the belief in personal obligation. Thanks for your time.

Jason, thanks as always for stopping by to read and comment.

I keyed in on the “allows for the empowerment of the elites by expunging the middle class and enlargement of the peon masses.” You zeroed in on one of the disturbing trends in so-called Western style democracies—the continuing movement towards socialism and elitism. On the one hand, more and more social services are created and handed out and more menial jobs created to keep the economy growing, while on the other hand the wealthy elite in power continue wiping out the middle class.

What you end up with if you pursue that to extremes is something right out of science fiction novels, with a privileged class ruling what are ostensibly indentured servants, with said people indentured to the government controlled by the wealthiest portion of society. I have always disliked conspiracy theories and many of the outright ridiculous claims by fringe groups on the far-left and far-right, but some of those previously “out there” visions of the future look remarkably more likely to happen these days.

When you look at what is happening on a global scale, you see the dilution of nations in a variety of ways: socially, ethnically, religiously, culturally, and ideologically. Everything is becoming rather homogeneous, and is pretty much already so in finance and economics. Almost every nation on the planet has a rather large portion of its land and business held by foreign investors. As more and more political unions and trade zones and world-government bodies are set up, the stage is being set for the next act in the play of globalization.

Unfortunately, declining oil resources and expected water and food shortages coupled with loss of a lot of coastal land due to rising sea levels over the next century are likely to play right into the hands of the wealthy elite. Refugees around the world will be on the move, and wars will be fought to expand and consolidate control of critical resources at a time when the world population is expected to increase to 9 billion around 2055. The population in Africa will increase by nearly 900 million, while in North America it will increase by 100 million—Europe, however, will have a population that declines by an estimated 66 million. As I have mentioned in other posts, there are European nations who have more emigration than immigration.

What this all amounts to will be an increase in global population by a third, with fewer resources, less land mass, and a wealthy class that will get wealthier off cheap labor. The hope is that the world’s population will be so homogeneous by the time things get to a critical situation, that people everywhere will have less inclination to fight for resources against other nations who have large populations of “their” kind—be it ethnic, political philosophy, religious, social, or some ideological group. Governments will no longer be entities that served the needs of people sharing those particular associations, however, and that is the interesting point.

Instead, they will be entities that serve the interests of geo-political boundaries—irregardless of whom it is that resides within those boundaries and what they believe. In effect, regional economic bureaucracies that will be controlled by the wealthy—who will be able to manipulate public offices (more than they do already) and which will be the new lords of the future socialist society of feudal capitalism. That means peons will power the bureaucracies which will fight over resources and get people used to international governance and global economic interdependence as a de facto state of human existence.

Not something I want to see. Which by the way, I suppose those of us who don’t want to see that ought to thank Islam and its followers—as they will never play along. The next century will probably be the most interesting in the last two millenia of human history.

Or maybe the ice caps at the poles won’t melt, Asia and Africa will suddenly embrace birth control, and the global population will suddenly become agrarian pacifists living a globally sustainable “green” lifestyle. But I wouldn’t bet on that one…

Too much talk on immigration. Talk about how this government supports the monetary system and globalization.
