Seeking Ithaca
March 27, 2007
A Dutch engineering firm will team up with a British archaeologist and the Greek Geological Society on an expedition to seek out the island of Homer’s legendary King Odysseus—Ithaca.
They will be using equipment more commonly used to explore for oil and gas in the effort to locate the island. Archaeologist Bittlestone believes Ithaca sat close to the island of Kefallonia and the sea channel became filled in with debris. Kefallonia is located in a very active volcanic region.
This is the sort of stuff that fascinates me and inspires my imagination. If they find the historical Ithaca of Homer’s legend, it won’t prove the existence of Odysseus, but it might cause us to think differently about the earliest tales from antiquity.
