Zimbabwe’s Mugabe Seizes Opposition Leader
March 12, 2007
As part of the clamp-down on recent civil unrest, the Mugabe government in Zimbabwe has arrested opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai. There are reports that he has been beaten, tortured, and denied medical care and a lawyer.
The list of abuses continues to grow, yet the rest of the world does little in the way of exerting real pressure on the Mugabe government. I was watching a documentary last night with Ted Koppel—about the War on Terror—which addressed Private Military Corporations. Companies like Blackwater have the capabilities to engage a government like Mugabe’s and liberate people, yet nobody to foot the bill.
Not that we need more warfare in the world. I am just musing out loud about the possibilities of a people seeking liberations and freedom to hire a PMC—in return for contractual guarantees that would pay the company back over time from the nations economic growth after its liberation and the subsequent creation of a free market. But then, that leads to many other ethical concerns.
I guess that leaves a long wait for peaceful transition. For some, the wait is deadly, however.
