Yay! Better Ads For MySpace! Like, Who Cares?

February 25, 2007

Fox Interactive Media just acquired Strategic Data Corporation and is attempting to put to use all the data it has gleaned from MySpace. They plan to create better ad targeting and leverage MySpace to challenge Yahoo, MSN and AOL.

OK, let’s go back and think about this. The MySpace crowd (of which I am one) doesn’t care for the ads on the site. They are specifically what ruins the site to begin with. Well, that and everyone who has ten videos on their profile page. And…

Never mind. MySpace is fun, but it is already getting old. The hunt is on for the next cool thing to be part of. I enjoy MySpace, but if I have ever clicked on an ad, believe me—it was a complete accident and a mistake I no doubt regretted.

I haven’t been able to reach half of the sections on MySpace today from my profile. Perhaps MySpace ought to focus on their infrastructure as much as they have getting acquired. But then, Tom probably doesn’t care. He will get his payday and get out, and the site will suffer a slow death once the new and better ads hit the site.

After all, better means more, doesn’t it?

MySpace has not worked for us either.

    Google is still King!

    Kirk,

While I am sure MySpace works for someone, I do not know who that someone is. I find it somewhat of an oddity. Instincts tell me it has a lot of potential, but the reality says it is being wasted.

Still, I must confess that it is a good example from which better models can be built. The direction I think social networking needs to go is smaller, however. Instead of huge centralized sites where everyone flocks together, individualized portals on the desktop would be more interesting and useful, I think.

Now, it isn’t entirely a waste. I do get some traffic from sending out bulletins occasionally about posts. However, I’m trying to be selective about whom I add as a friend, so my list of contacts remains small. The upside of that is that my bulletins are more likely to produce visits because I actually am establishing relationships rather than adding as many people I can in order to spam notices about. Word of mouth works best when the word is coming from someone you know after all.

While the ability to customize is part of what everyone likes about the whole Web 2.0 concept (I personally can’t stand that term…), it is largely what screws up the effectiveness of the MySpace model as one to copy. A few more of the right controls would make it infinitely much more pleasant.

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment!

    Have a great day.
