Attack On Iran? Understanding Why It Might Be Needed

January 14, 2007

Perhaps someone is listening to sound advice from somewhere after all. President Bush’s new surge policy speech last week included comments about pursuing those who fuel the violence in Iraq, wherever they are. Glad to hear it.

Maybe the White House is reading my blog? That would be nice. They might learn a thing or two. Just in case they are, I suggest they read Santa Delivers: Ethiopia Kicks Crap Out Of Radical Islam On Christmas, which mentions the need to pursue cross-border operations in the Iraqi theatre of operations.

Required Reading For The White House

I also encourage the White House to dust off a copy of The Prince, by Nicollo Machiavelli. If the Pentagon can spend hundreds of dollars on a hammer, surely they can spring for $20-30 and pick up a nice hardcover copy that all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff can share?

Every single mistake we have made in Iraq could have been avoided based on the knowledge and suggestions of Machiavelli and another fine strategic mind—Sun Tzu.

They might also want to read The Art of War Plus Strategy Against Terror: Ancient Wisdom for Today’s War, by Gary Gagliardi and Sun Tzu. This book shows what most people miss. I hear a lot of people comment that Sun Tzu’s strategy can’t be applied to today’s warfare. That’s utter rubbish and it comes from those who are either uneducated or those whose weak intellects cannot comprehend underlying principles and fail to understand the difference and reasoning behind what is said and the actual words used to say it.

With more warships in the region and Israel supposedly preparing plans for a possible nuclear strike on Iran’s emerging nuclear threat, everyone ought to understand why the possibility of an attack is increasingly likely. That means a third book required for reading by anyone who wants to truly grasp the basic mechanics of political workings in todays age needs to read Warrior Politics: Why Leadership Demands a Pagan Ethos, by Robert D. Kaplan.

Democrats’ “Run Away And Hide” Plan Is No Solution

I also read a pointless piece by Molly Ivins, who says we’ve already lost the war in Iraq. Funny, there’s a new government, a new army, and we’re still there fighting. We only lose if we quit and abandon Iraqis to the radicals we’re at war with. As is usual of most liberals, she rails against doing something, yet offers no solution other than doing nothing.

Sorry, I’d rather go down fighting than lay down, curl up, squeeze my eyes tightly shut, and grovel…hoping that everyone else in the world will be nice to me. I’m so glad I’m not a leftist Democrat, because I don’t think I could stand to associate myself with cowardice, appeasement, and lack of will or imagination. I mean, Ted Kennedy’s killed more people than our our troops have in the Gitmo detention camp—remember that night out drinking, Ted? Three detainees who died hung themselves, however.

I have no sympathy for them. If they didn’t want to end up where they did, they shouldn’t have been supporting a regime that attacked us by proxy through Al Qaeda—whom they sheltered and supported. Just like “innocent” Iraqis are dying in Iraq. Well, they’re not entirely innocent. They supported Saddam and the oppressive Baath party and insurgents on all sides of the fence are to blame. If you as a people even tacitly condone what your government does by abiding it, then you’re as guilty as those actually doing whatever it is they do.

So, for years, Iraqis condoned what Saddam Hussein did. Including the invasion of Kuwait and the subsequent murdering, raping, and theft of that country’s wealth. So, I really don’t want to hear about the suffering of innocent detainees in Gitmo or anywhere else. If they were armed and fighting against us, they’re reaping the results of what they’ve sown.

We Need A New Political Party

As I said, I’m glad I’m not a Democrat. Thing is, I’m not a Republican either.

The Republican party is too hung up on religion, too weak on defense, and they are eroding our rights and personal freedoms too much. I’m more liberal than most, but adamant that a nation is only great when it shows strength in addition to leadership, mercy, and compassion. I personally believe America needs a new political party that puts America first. Maybe then we’d get something done about illegal immigration as a bonus.

Oh well. I’m just glad to hear the White House isn’t ruling out options. It would be better, however, to hear they were actually doing something.

An attack on Iran in the present circumstances without Iraq fully stabilised and a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan would be dangerous. I think the US and NATO need to stabilise these two countries as a top priority. Till then any other confrontation in the region must be avoided/prevented at all costs. For this more troops are needed. An exit from Iraq at this stage would prove disastrous indeed.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I do agree that any other regional confrontation runs considerable risks. However, as I mentioned in another post, it can also be a useful tool to unite Iraqis by giving them a common foe to fight against. You have to remember that they fought Iran for almost a decade not long ago.

It does, in the end, boil down to weighing risks and creating a strategic plan which is followed through. A lack of resolve and committment is almost worse than no plan in some instances. It’s kind of like boxing…

You can throw a punch and not put everything behind it. That punch might miss and leave you open to a knock-out punch from your opponent. You might as well use everything you’ve got with each blow, and trust to your skill, training and aim. Holding back because you worry about what your opponent does is a bad tactic.

Only hold back if you’re assessing, analyzing, and setting the enemy up—preparing to attack with what you discover of the enemy’s weaknesses you observe. And certainly, if you’re not going for the win, you shouldn’t have bothered to climb in the ring.

    Thanks again for stopping by.

Alan, thanks for the link. I checked out the article and found it very interesting. It matches what a few analysts with their eyes open have been saying for a while.

It’s certainly a scary thought, but isn’t surprising, that the Iranian govenment is readying for the largest jihad yet. It’s been relegated to individuals and organizations in the past mostly, but sooner or later, with Islamic governments, it’s bound to happen that one will eventually make it official on world stage.

Iran is the most likely candidate.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
